When Brian Colquhoun, a visiting theoretical physicist at KEK, was growing up in Ayrshire, Scotland, he had an abiding desire to know how things worked. No surprise then, that of the three possible subject he could have chosen to study at the University of Glasgow—mathematics, computer science or physics—he chose physics. “That’s because there is still much to learn about its underlying principles,” he says.
